Trained By Trial

As another wave of COVID19 claims more lives, closes more businesses, and rattles the faith of believers, it leaves us to wonder; what it’s all for? The popular theory is that God is raining His wrath on the Earth, a drastic form of judgment to get those sinners in line. What if we took a closer look into the boggling year of 2020 and discover that it was actually a year to train us for our purpose? This year has challenged our faith, pushed our limits, and brutally shaped our perspective of the world. If we take a closer look, we can see the hand of God carrying us through, and more importantly, we see the lessons we’ve learned in spite of the storm. Here are 3 ways God prepares us in trying seasons.

1. Trained in the dark

It’s no wonder God chose the darkness of a womb to develop our bodies, darkness is where training happens. It’s odd that when fear rises in us when the lights go out when from the moment we are conceived the most pivotal growth is done in the darkness. Likewise, when we are reborn in Christ our life depends solely on faith; a consistent training of walking on a tightrope with a blindfold on. “Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4 Believers are trained in the dark because it calls for our absolute trust in God and He only sends those He can trust to carry out His plan.

2. Trained in the desert

There’s something awful and awesome about the desert. In the bible, we learn how it was a breeding ground for the hardest lessons the people of God had to learn. Moses was trained there before meeting Pharaoh Exodus 3:1-2, Joshua watch as a whole generation died out so his generation could be raised in faith Numbers 14:29-30, and Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before beginning His ministry Matthew 4:1-11. It’s been proven that when God can get us alone we can focus on Him and desert places are used to train us to be with Him. As painful as it is the requirements of training in the desert are rejection, failure, and sometimes, hitting rock bottom. We think it’s an attack of the enemy but it’s really God preparing us for the glory that will be revealed within us.

3. Trained in disaster

Well, isn’t 2020 the perfect place to train? This year has been full of uncertainty, fear, loss, and major discomfort; we’ve felt trapped in tragedy. What is heaven doing?! We can’t be distracted by the disaster around us, we have to remember what God has said concerning us since the last night of 2019 Isaiah 55:11. If we are not wiser, sharper, kinder, more loving, more aware of our faults, or resolved in our faith walk, then what was it all for? Olympic champions train in some of the harshest conditions to prepare themselves to win because it builds their endurance and pushes their limits. As believers we are being trained to be champions, to be messengers of the Gospel, and safe places for unbelievers to see the love of God. We can’t waste this year focused on what we’ve had to endure, we have to trust that by the end we’ll be refined, polished, and ready for purpose!
